Ok, so have you ever felt the spirit so strong that you just can't smiling. Oh man, I don't think that even does it justice...I can't even think of a good way to explain how I feel right now. Um....there is a song (if I'm thinking of the words correctly) that explains exactly how I feel "I'm so excited...I just can't hide it!" Only my excitement is a spiritual one.
So let me explain. Tonight I went to a fireside by Alex Boye. I've heard a few of his songs and he's pretty good, but this was incredible. You all know that I pretty much have ADD. I can't sit still for very long and I get easily bored. Not this time. This fireside was just under 2 hours long and I could have sat there for 3 more hours. He only sang 3 songs (which were incredible)and he talked the rest of the time. There were times I was rolling with laughter, times I was in complete shock and times when I was near tears. There were definitely moments when I swear he was speaking straight to me.
Because I'm so excited I wanted to share a little bit of what I learned. First off, we are what we think. Whatever occupies our minds most often, that is what we become. It's an amazing concept but it's true. It's in the scriptures, it's something I've briefly thought about before, but nothing I really thought enough to put into practice. In 2 Nephi 24:24 it says (this is the Lord speaking) "surely as I have though, so shall it come to pass..." Now keep in mind that is the Lord, but we are commanded to become like him. And we can. It doesn't have to be in the next life, but it can happen in this one. Now comes some of my personal moments..the big "ah ha" moments that came to me during this fireside. First, it brought me back to my mission when we were told that miracles we experienced and miracles that happened in the lives of people we taught were dependant upon our faith. We literally had the power through our faith to change people. To change our circumstance. It worked. I remember vividly times when I put it to the test and really focused on what I knew were righteous desires. Now why couldn't that work for us in normal everyday life? It can. Alex shared a story of a race he ran, he had serious surgery and was in a body cast for about a year when he was in Secondary School. All of his friends were running track and he wanted to join them so badly. Everyday he would watch them and he run himself (in his head only). Everyday he invisioned himself winning the race. He eventually had the cast removed and he challenged the reigning champ to a race. No one thought it would be close, there is no way he could win after all that time of not running, but guess what..he won. He won because he thought of it everyday. He saw himself winning, he practiced in his head and that was enough. He also shared a story of a guy that was a POW for 7 years. When he finally was released the first thing he did was play a round of golf with his buddies. He beat them. He hadn't played golf in 7 years but he beat them. When they asked him how he did it he said it was golf that kept him alive. That everyday for the last 7 years he invisioned himself playing and winning. And he did.
So, time for application, I want to become an interpreter right? I can't possibly walk around signing everything (how wierd would that be?) But I can go through the motions in my head so it becomes 2nd nature. This works in every aspect of our lives.
Another thing he talked about was how we attract what we are. Whether it be in a spouse or a friend, etc. If you want to meet someone who is angry, just be an angry person and you'll be sure to find another person who is angry. If you want to meet someone who complains, just complain about everything, he'll come. If you want to meet someone with a strong testimony, someone who isn't a jerk, someone who has their priorities right in life, someone who laughs a lot and knows how to life and love life, then you need to gain a strong testimony, stop being a jerk, get your priorities right, laugh at things and learn how to live and love life. You will attract that kind of person.
Let it go. This one was a real eye opener for me. If someone walks away from you (whether it be a boy, a friend, an acquaintance, even an enemy) let them go. It's not worth it to have them in your life. Don't try to talk them back into your life, they chose to left, let them go. Let grudges go. If you had a bad day or said something stupid, just let it go, don't dwell on it. If you often get down on yourself and pitty your sad little pathetic life, let it go. You shouldn't let those things decide who you are. Until you let them go, they will control you. They will be who you are.
Sorry, this is just about a novel. I'm writing this more for me than any of you really. It's pretty much my journal entry. I'm going to print it and put it in my journal (the same journal I haven't written in since a few months before I got back from my mission).
There is one more thing I want to share with you. This was the most amazing part for me. When Peter walked on the water, as he was walking to Christ he said the stupidest thing ever "Lord, how is it done?" (or something close to that) At that precise moment he began to sink. The Lord responded and said "O thou of little faith, wherefore didst though doubt?" Peter was doing just fine until he asked "how?" That's when he lost his faith. I think we spent so much time wondering how will meet our FEC, or how we'll get get through a tough day at work, or how we'll teach that lesson at church, or how we'll even talk to that boy (yeah...B), you know what I mean. We need to stop asking HOW. Just do what you know you should be doing and don't worry about how.
So that's it folks. It was incredible. I don't really want to stop feeling like this, but I know tomorrow it'll start to fade, I'll get distracted..and I'll have to come back and read this to remind myself.
